Academic freedom for "contingent faculty"

A piece I wrote is up today at Inside Higher Ed. Stepping away for a moment from my usual theme, I argue that the Ward Churchill affair has provided a smokscreen for the most serious problem American universities face in protecting academic freedom: shrinking tenure and the increased vulnerability of contingent faculty.
